Layered candy floss vase by Martijntje Cornelia
Designing with candy floss
Taking her love of sugar to the next level, designer Martijntje Cornelia crafts everything from furniture to jewellery out of her signature material: candy floss. Though some may view her choice as odd, the chameleon-like qualities of the material make it fun and interesting to work with. The candy floss can be made into a soft substance or developed into a tough one, but with time the material evolves. While the longevity of the artwork is questionable, one thing is for sure: count us in on the sweet necklaces!

A Place for the Planet
Two things we love are architecture and the environment, which is why we’re so excited about this new 13-floor instalment in São Paulo, Brazil. The project is an initiative by Amata, a forest management company, and Triptyque, an architecture studio. It is predicted to be completed in 2018 and the structure will be made with cross-laminated Brazilian timber to absorb atmospheric CO2. Each cubic meter of wood will absorb one metric ton of atmospheric CO2. That’s the kind of results we like to see and we can’t wait for this building to take back the skies by supporting a healthier planet and happier people.

Lion Stroll by Theodor Seuss Geisel
The Secret Life of Dr. Seuss
Everyone has read a Dr. Seuss book in their lifetime, but have you seen his other artwork? We hadn’t either, but we’re sure glad we have now. After Theodor Seuss Geisel’s death in 1990, his “Midnight Paintings” came into public view. This collection includes paintings, drawings, and sculptures that Seuss crafted at night for his own artistic enjoyment. Each piece gives you a peek into Geisel’s private life, while still giving viewers the familiarity of style seen in his illustrations.

Kowloon by Marcus Wendt
Streets that are Never Dark
After getting off his plane to Hong Kong, Marcus Wendt found himself strolling through the not-so-dark streets of the Kowloon area. Though it was the middle of the night, one street after the next was bathed in neon lights of all shades. This weird combination of starch darkness and neon brightness created an atmosphere similar to a 1990’s cyberpunk game. Thankfully, this blend generated some really cool photographs that Wendt has collected into a portfolio called “Ultraviolet Break of Day”.

A beetle cyborg by Dr Hirotaka Sato at NTU
Cyborg Beetles
When looking at the future of security, it looks small. Doctor Hirotaka Sato, an aerospace engineer at Nanyang Technological University, and his team are responsible for that. Their current project is turning live beetles into cyborgs by electronically controlling their motor functions. What is the point of this? In doing so, people can dictate where these indiscrete animals move and strategically place them to gain information. Each cyborg is equipped with a sensor that can detect heat and therefore track people. Though this sounds creepy, Dr. Sato ensures that the research is strictly for peaceful purposes. This makes sense when thinking how successful a small bug would be in tracking a criminal. One has to wonder though, how far could this go?
